Pencil Drawing, Acid Free Board (220 gsm) with 3 inch white mount and framed with glass 'Hunted' is an original pencil drawing of a white or square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium Simum) the largest species of rhinoceros which is hunted for game. The lifeless animal's head propped on a rock with its eyes still open posed for a trophy photo. This has been the sad plight of this magnificent animal. The White rhino has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The white rhinoceros consists of two subspecies: the southern white rhinoceros, with an estimated 19,682-21,077 wild-living animals in the year 2015, and the much rarer northern white rhinoceros. The northern subspecies had very few remaining, with only three confirmed individuals left in 2015 (two females Fatu, 15 and Najin, 25 and one male Sudan, 42), all in captivity. A sad ending to the life of a majestic animal. This painting brings out the emotion and sorrow of the plight of the wild at the hands of those who disregard the interdependence between man and beast. A personal note is conveyed through the sorrowful stare of the dead rhino, as if to ask the question "Why?" The creator has skillfully and creatively utilized a black and white shading for this portrait to exemplify the bitter emotion that is conveyed through the art.
