Janaka Ratnayake is a legendary self-taught Sri Lankan artist whose creative journey spans over five decades and has left a lasting mark on the country’s art and media landscape. Widely celebrated for revolutionising Sri Lankan cartoons and comic storytelling, his trend-setting creations in Sinhala newspapers captured the spirit, humour, and emotions of youth, earning him an enormous and loyal fan base.
Many of his iconic comic stories were later adapted into popular teledramas and films, further cementing his influence on Sri Lanka’s visual culture. Following his retirement from mainstream media, Janaka joined the 2020 Group, dedicating himself fully to fine art and establishing a distinguished career as a professional painter.
Renowned as one of Sri Lanka’s finest watercolour artists, Janaka Ratnayake is admired for his unique realistic style and masterful technique.
