Finding Beauty in the Ordinary – An Interview with Artist Basil Cooray

There are some artists in the world who take the ordinary and turn it into beautiful masterpieces. They find something amazing in everything. Our artist in conversation today is Basil Cooray, a wonderful contemporary artist. We are honored to bring this interview to you today!

How long have you been painting?

I began painting when I was doing my Ordinary Level exams back in 1977. I remember winning the International Year of the Child Art competition, which motivated me to continue painting. My brother also had a talent for art, and that inspired me to keep going.

Who are your greatest influencers?

There was a local artist named Richard Gabriel — he was an amazing artist who used many colors, different styles, and figures in his paintings. I prefer to add my own touch to every painting I create, making them a little different from the norm. I’ve also been influenced by Modi Gilani, an Italian artist whose brilliant use of color inspired me to develop my own vibrant combinations.

Did you have a formal education in art and painting, or are you self-taught?

I’ve worked with many teachers during my time — Douglas Paul, Dominic Siril, and Stanley Abeysinghe are a few of them. I also studied at the Vibhavi Academy under Mr. Chandraguptha for two years, where I learned drawing and figure creation. I didn’t study painting directly, but I learned the techniques related to it. So, I would say I’m a combination of both formal education and self-learning.

Do you have a particular style? How did you become passionate about it?

I am a contemporary artist. I create long figures, which is a style unique to me. My paintings are often compared to those of Ivan Peiris. What drew me most to this style is the harmony and emotion that comes from experimenting with color combinations.

What are your other passions besides art? How have they influenced your work?

I love traveling around the island and going for long walks. During my visits to interior villages in Sri Lanka, I often take my camera to capture scenes that later inspire my paintings. One particular village I often visit is Ahatuwawewa — it has beautiful surroundings and a peaceful lifestyle I greatly admire. The villagers are often seen playing the flute as the sun sets, and I’ve created an entire series of paintings from this one moment.

Could you walk us through your process? How important is preparation in your work?

As I mentioned earlier, I create series of paintings that form a story. For example, if I’m painting a landscape, I first observe the surroundings, sketch, and sometimes take reference photos. I then draw the outline on canvas and gradually fill in the details and colors. An oil painting usually takes about a week if I work continuously, but I prefer to take breaks — an artist must have a clear and calm mind to paint effectively.

Are you engaged in new artistic explorations?

Yes, I believe it’s important to stay updated with new developments in the art world, while still keeping your individuality. When someone sees my painting, I want them to recognize it as mine. I’ve expanded from watercolors and oil paintings to acrylics, and I’ve also experimented with charcoal and mixed media, both of which I admire.

Was there a moment you realized your work had become exceptional?

Over the years, many people have told me that my paintings are not just good, but great. I’ve also received many accolades for my work. I began with watercolors but eventually moved on to charcoal and oil — that shift helped me refine my skills and express more depth in my paintings.

How do you push yourself as an artist? Do you set goals?

I think having goals in life is very important — they keep us focused. As an artist, I’ve always had a plan for myself, and I can humbly say I’ve achieved those goals. I have no regrets.

How has your experience been working with Aartzy?

This December marks one year since I joined Aartzy. It’s a fantastic platform for Sri Lankan artists because it gives us exposure to international audiences. In a world that’s becoming increasingly digital, I believe Aartzy has taken the right step by creating this wonderful space for artists.
