Art is the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, such as painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, or theatre. If you love the creative process, perhaps you’ll devote your life to art. Our artist in conversation today is someone who has created true masterpieces — none other than Hiran Sumith Fernando, an exceptionally talented artist who creates paintings using acrylic and black-and-white Rotring pen. He is also renowned for his remarkable wall paintings created with marker pens. We are delighted to present this inspiring conversation with him.
How long have you been painting?
I have been engaged in painting for nearly twenty-five years. My interest in art began during childhood and continued to grow as I studied it throughout my school years.
Who are your greatest influencers?
One of my uncles, who was also an artist, played a significant role in recognizing and nurturing my potential. During my time at Prince of Wales College, I had the privilege of studying under Mr. Tissa Gunawardena, a highly respected art teacher. His mentorship and guidance profoundly influenced my artistic development and further strengthened my passion for art.

Did you have a formal education in art and painting or are you self-taught?
As mentioned earlier, my formal education in art was limited to my school years. However, I was fortunate to work under the guidance of Mr. Tissa Weerawardena, a distinguished artist known for his large-scale pandal paintings. Collaborating with him for several years provided me with invaluable practical experience, which ultimately inspired me to pursue painting as a full-time profession. Since then, I have devoted myself entirely to the artistic path.
Do you have a particular style? How did you become so passionate about it?
I would describe myself as a highly imaginative and experimental artist. I do not confine myself to a single style or approach, as I constantly explore new techniques and strokes. At present, my focus lies on paintings and line drawings inspired by nature and abstract concepts. My love for travel has also had a profound influence on my work, as it continually deepens my connection with the natural world.
What are your other passions, and how have they contributed to your art?
In addition to painting, I have worked as an art director in films and television dramas, contributing to major productions such as Siddhartha the Buddha. I am also passionate about travelling, which allows me to unwind and draw creative inspiration from my surroundings. This connection with nature often finds expression in my artwork.

Could you walk us through your process? How important is preparation in your work?
Preparation plays a crucial role in my creative process. Before beginning a painting, I take time to visualize the concept clearly in my mind and then create a preliminary sketch. Only after this stage do I begin painting. If the brushstrokes do not initially reflect my envisioned outcome, I adapt the work until it acquires a meaningful expression. I believe adaptability is an essential quality for any artist. Typically, I complete a painting within a week.
Are you engaged in new artistic adventures?
Yes, I am always eager to explore new artistic directions. I believe art possesses the power to transform perspectives, and like human understanding, it must evolve continuously. Therefore, I strive to experiment with new ideas and techniques. I also greatly value the opportunity to meet and learn from senior artists. Their advice and experiences are deeply meaningful to me.
Was there a moment when you realized you had become an exceptional painter?
Over the years, I have participated in numerous exhibitions, and my paintings have been acquired by both local and international art enthusiasts. I have also taken part in Kalapola for over three years and maintained a dedicated stall at Colombo City Centre for an extended period. At present, I primarily paint from home, which provides me with a sense of tranquility and fulfillment.
How do you push yourself as an artist? Do you set goals?
I believe setting goals is essential not only for artists but for anyone striving for growth and purpose. It provides focus and motivation. One of my most significant goals is soon to be realized — I will be hosting my first solo exhibition at the Panadura Town Hall on January 21, 2024, which also marks my birthday. This event represents a deeply meaningful milestone in my artistic journey.
How has your experience been working with Aartzy?
I became a member of Aartzy quite recently, yet the experience has already been immensely rewarding. I now realize how beneficial it would have been had I joined earlier. Aartzy has provided me with a platform to share my work with audiences across the globe. I am sincerely grateful to Mr. Janaka and the entire Aartzy team for their unwavering support and encouragement.
