Story of a Painter (Ep. 33) - Kumara Rathnayaka

Dec 5, 2025

Art is the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, such as painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, or theatre. If you love the creative process, perhaps you’ll devote your life to art. Our artist in conversation today is someone whose work has pushed the boundaries of contemporary painting—none other than Kumara Rathnayaka, one of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished modern artists. With an extraordinary imagination and a mastery of color, shade, and light, he creates powerful visual experiences that reflect both emotional depth and artistic freedom. Having held numerous exhibitions locally and internationally—including in Germany, Sweden, and Austria—Kumara stands at the forefront of contemporary art in Sri Lanka. We are delighted to present this remarkable conversation with him.

How long have you been painting?

I have been painting for nearly thirty-five years. My journey began at a young age, and over time it evolved into a deep, lifelong commitment to contemporary art. Each stage of my life has shaped the artist I am today.

Who are your greatest influencers?

My greatest influences come not from a single individual but from the evolution of modern art itself. Contemporary painting, with its limitless freedom and absence of strict traditions, shaped my artistic identity. Observing global art movements and the works of pioneering modernists inspired me to develop my own voice and imaginative style.

Did you have a formal education in art and painting or are you self-taught?

My artistic development is the result of years of exploration and self-driven practice. Although I did not follow a structured academic path in art, decades of experimentation and professional experience—combined with exposure to local and international art circles—helped me refine my techniques. I learned by challenging myself, observing, travelling, and continuously creating.

Do you have a particular style? How did you become so passionate about it?

I work within a contemporary framework driven by inner imagination and emotional depth. My paintings do not follow traditional methods; instead, I focus on dynamic strokes, expressive lines, and the fusion of color, shade, and light to convey poetic movement. The passion I hold for contemporary art grew naturally, as it gave me the freedom to express ideas without limitations.

What are your other passions, and how have they contributed to your art?

Travelling has played a significant role in expanding my artistic vision. Exhibiting my work in countries such as Germany, Sweden, and Austria exposed me to diverse artistic influences and environments. These experiences enriched my imagination and strengthened the global perspective reflected in my paintings.

Could you walk us through your process? How important is preparation in your work?

My process is rooted in intuition and imagination. Rather than following a strict method, I allow ideas and emotions to guide the movement of my brush. Light, shade, and color merge organically as I explore the mood I wish to capture. While I often begin with a mental concept, I let the artwork evolve freely on the canvas. This spontaneity and adaptability are essential to my creative approach.

Are you engaged in new artistic adventures?

Absolutely. As a contemporary artist, I am constantly exploring new visual languages and techniques. I believe that art must evolve continually, and I embrace opportunities to push boundaries, engage with global art communities, and exhibit my work internationally.

Was there a moment when you realized you had become an exceptional painter?

My recognition grew gradually through numerous exhibitions held locally and abroad. Seeing my paintings appreciated by art lovers in Europe and other regions affirmed the impact of my work. These experiences—combined with decades of artistic exploration—made me realize that my contribution to contemporary Sri Lankan art was reaching a global audience.

How do you push yourself as an artist? Do you set goals?

Yes, goal-setting is an essential part of my artistic life. I consistently challenge myself to refine my style, experiment with new concepts, and bring fresh energy into my work. Every exhibition, every new series, and every innovative idea becomes a goal that drives me forward on my artistic journey.

How has your experience been working with Aartzy?

Becoming a part of Aartzy has opened a new gateway for my art. The platform allows me to connect with global audiences and share my work more widely. I truly appreciate the support and encouragement offered by the Aartzy team, and I look forward to continuing this inspiring partnership.
