A midnight sky dominates this painting as a lonely ship sails towards the audience. Shades of dark blue, gray and a touch of green are smeared across the canvas within short brushstrokes which melt into the night sky. Only the moon- uncovered by the clouds casts an illuminating light on the picture; its rays reflect on the sea.

A smoky fog hangs to the end of the boat, creating a chilly background through which the ship seems to appear. With its masts bear, the intricate, sharp details of the ship stand out against the other hazy blue background, adding complex dimensions of the painting.
